Over 80 remand centre inmates screened for disease
published: Saturday | January 6, 2007

Breese

While the daily fogging at the Horizon correctional facility in Kingston continues, more than 80 inmates have already been screened for malaria.

"Five persons, including three inmates and two correctional officers, have so far contracted the disease," said Major Richard Reese, head of the Department of Correctional Services.

Apart from fogging, prison officials have been supervising the cleaning of a gully which runs behind the penal facility on Spanish Town Road. Major Reese has also proposed to clean up a section of the May Pen Cemetery which is located immediately across from the Horizon Correctional Centre.

Up to Thursday, prison officials were locked in discussions on whether or not they should suspend visits to the prison.

At the end of 2006, medical experts said more than 180 persons had tested positive for malaria.
