Cricket World Cup could spark Trelawny investments - Business leaders hopeful about new era of prosperity
published: Friday | January 12, 2007

Adrian Frater, News Editor

WESTERN BUREAU:

While preparations are lagging behind, business leaders in Trelawny are optimistic that their hosting of the opening ceremony for the 2007 International Cricket Council Cricket World Cup will be the catalyst in sparking new investments and igniting a new era of prosperity.

"This is a unique opportunity to showcase Trelawny's potential as a tourist destination with a difference," said Trelawny's Custos, the Honourable Roylan Barrett. "This is the catalyst for the development we are aspiring for and we cannot afford to blow it."

Business community

Despite setbacks, such as Government's failure to develop the Hampden Wharf into the promised major cultural centre, and the uncertainty surrounding whether or not the new Trelawny Police Headquarters, the new fire department and new wing at the Falmouth Hospital will be ready, confidence remains high in the business community.

"We have decided not to sit back and wait on Government," said Dennis Seivwright, the president of the Trelawny Chamber of Commerce.

"We are now seeking sponsorship to clean up the wharf and we intend to create a major commercial space there to promote our music, culture, art, craft and architecture."

Emphasising the need to derive maximum benefit from the World Cup, Custos Barrett said that, unlike their Kingston counterparts, who have been complaining about the lack of governmental input in their preparation, Trelawny is not in a position to procrastinate.

Tourism potential

"Kingston has a racetrack, Sabina Park and so many other attractions," noted Custos Barrett. "What we have is our tourism potential and this is a perfect opportunity to showcase what we have to offer."

A number of overseas-based Trelawny residents are also planning to promote the parish in the build-up to the World Cup opening ceremony. More than 600 members of the group Friends of Trelawny Association will be returning to participate in the Trelawny homecoming celebration, which will coincide with the World Cup opening ceremony.

The homecoming celebration, which will offer a blend of sports, culture and heritage, will be highlighted by activities such as the Custos & Mayor Welcome Party, a 20/20 Curry Goat Cricket Classic, an Investment Seminar for locals and visitors, a Homecoming Ball, a major Cultural Concert and a Food Exposition.
