Jamaican quartet in ODI squad for India
published: Friday | January 12, 2007

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):

It has now been confirmed that West Indies have named uncapped Rayad Emrit in a 14-member squad for a series of four One-Day Internationals against India later this month.

Emrit is the only complete newcomer in the squad which also shows recalls for opener Devon Smith and all-rounder Darren Sammy.

"This is our last chance to look at a few players and they have been included because you do not know what might happen in the next few weeks," convenor of selectors Gordon Greenidge told CMC Sport yesterday.

"We have a few injuries and we want to have a look at a few players at international level to see what they have to offer."

Not fully recovered

Ramnaresh Sarwan has not fully recovered from a foot injury sustained on the tour of Pakistan and he was not considered for selection.

Lendl Simmons will miss his second straight match for his native Trinidad & Tobago this weekend in the Carib Beer Series, but Greenidge said "he has declared himself fit and available."

Greenidge also indicated that West Indies will announce its provisional 30-member squad for the Cricket World Cup 2007 in the Caribbean tomorrow and all of the players in the squad to India will feature in it.

The team to India was selected over one week ago, but it was not released immediately, although several regional media companies reported on the selection.

Appearance fees

The reason advanced for the delay in naming the squad was the usual dispute between the West Indies Cricket Board and the West Indies Players' Associa-tion over appearance fees.

In India, West Indies play matches at Nagpur (January 21), Cuttack (January 24), Chennai (January 27) and Vadodara (January 31).

It will be the side's final tune-up before CWC 2007, where West Indies have been drawn alongside Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Ireland in Group D of the first round.

Squad: Brian Lara (captain), Ian Bradshaw, Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Rayad Emrit, Chris Gayle, Runako Morton, Daren Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Marlon Samuels, Darren Sammy, Lendl Simmons, Devon Smith, Jerome Taylor.
