PM dismisses election calls again... Declares that 'nation's business' will not be derailed
published: Tuesday | January 16, 2007

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, has once again dismissed calls for an election date saying that persons making the call want to see the nation's affairs derailed.

Speaking at a media fete at Laughing Waters, Ocho Rios, St. Ann, the Prime Minister re-iterated that she will announce the election date when she sees it appropriate.

Nation's business

"Forget the election. Everybody wants the country to come on standstill, Portia will not allow that. When I call the election. I call the election, but I am going to carry on the nation's business."

Elections are constitutionally due by October of this year and the Prime Minister says that since she has until October she will be focusing on the nation's business.

"Election cannot be more important than the Jamaican people. It is important to hold so that the people can exercise their democratic right. But I have until October and nobody is going to push me before I am ready for the election."

The Prime Minister is also pouring cold water on a possible debate between herself and Opposition Leader Bruce Golding before general elections.

No 'chatting'

"I see people calling for debates; I am a worker not a talker - I have things to do, I have a country to run, I can't be all over the place just chatting chatting, I want to register some serious achievements this year."

Mrs. Simpson Miller, who also avoided debates during the Peoples National Party Presidential elections, however, says she will be working with the media to keep the nation informed.
