The Editor, Sir:
It is with great interest that I read your letter about JCF corrupt cops. I have personally known this for years. I for one, whenever I leave my house I always have 'a likkle' something just in case I am stopped. Yes, I know that it is bad but I have friends who will just not give them a cent and would much rather get the ticket and then go to court to fight it.
There was one occasion when I was on my way to the airport to pick up someone and on Constant Spring Road, near to Half-Way Tree, three cops on bicycles stopped me for changing lane (I changed the lane to make a turn). Two of the cops stood by and acted nonchalantly while the third went for the gold. That day, I really did not feel up to it and started to argue but was reminded by my worker that I would be late getting to the airport, so I quietly said that all I had was $1,000, which was true and although they had asked for $3,000, they grudgingly took it. According to them, the ticket would have been $10,000.
Wouldn't it be better if they had given me the ticket so that the department could benefit from the ticket violations (real or made up)? I am not saying that it's right but ticket money is budgeted to run the government.
Sad to say, as you take a look at why nothing gets done in Jamaica, it is because of severe corruption in every form; JCF is just a part of the problem.
I am, etc.,
