Umpires pull stumps on St Jago
published: Wednesday | January 17, 2007

Anthony Foster, Freelance Writer

Bad light saved Wolmer's from an embarrassing defeat against St. Jago at Mico University College grounds yesterday, in their Grace Shield Under-19 cricket match.

Chasing 216 to win in two hours, and with 137 to get in the final hour at 9.13 runs per over, St. Jago were well on the way to scoring a breathtaking victory when the umpires pulled up stumps at 5:50 p.m. for bad light with the St. Catherine-based school needing a mere 14 runs for victory. They were 202 for two wickets.

Joseph Lemmie and former national Under-15 player, Garth Garvey, who were both scoring at over 10 runs per over at the time, expressed their shock and disappointment with the umpires' decision lying down on the pitch.

Contrastingly, their Wolmer's opponents erupted in celebration.

Five of the 15 mandatory overs were outstanding.

Though the light appeared good and the batsmen having no difficulty seeing the ball as they were hitting the ball cleanly and the fielders seemed to be picking up the balls, the umpires after pulling stumps, came under pressure from a few spectators, but said the fielding team was in danger.

Lemmie was not out on 103, which came off only 63 deliveries and laced with seven sixes and eight fours, while Garvey hit five fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 42 off 21 balls.

Earlier, Wolmer's, paced by former national Under-15 player Jon-Ross Campbell, who rode his luck to score 134, notch 215.

Campbell hit three sixes and 10 fours off 214 deliveries. Millard Ramsay, 15, who shared in an important 78-run ninth-wicket stand with Campbell and Percival Braham, 14, were the other batsmen to reach double figures.

André Bernard (2-18), Richard Miller (2-25) and Fredrick Wright (2-42) took most wickets.

At Meadowbrook, Oshane Walker scored 68 in Meadowbrook's 144 and returned 6-13 to help dismiss Tarrant for 67 as his team won by 77 runs.

At Courtney Walsh Oval (Excelsior), Jamaica College, 84, defeated Excelsior, 40, by 44 runs. Ransford Merchant took 6-12 when JC batted, while Carlyle Moxam picked up 6-9 in Excelsior's innings.

At Maxfield Park, Norman Manley, 168, defeated Spanish Town, 88, by 80 runs.
