Cabinet on Monday approved two air service agreements between Jamaica and Chile and Jamaica and Brazil.

According to Donald Buchanan, Minister of Information and Development, the agreements are expected "to enhance and make more liberal route schedules" between Jamaica and the two South American countries.

The Information Minister was speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, St. Andrew.

Renewal

He noted that, in the case of Chile, this was the renewal of an agreement which was first signed in 1994.

"When I enquired as to whether the reference had been entered upon with respect to direct air links between Chile and Jamaica subsequent to that 1994 agreement, I was told that up to this point in time that has not yet been activated," Mr. Buchanan said.

The Information Minister noted, however, that it was important to keep these air service lines, in terms of the agreement, open "so that at anytime you could have direct air links between Chile and Jamaica".

Turning to the agreement with Brazil, he said it would make it possible for air links to be established between the two countries, in particular, with the northern and north eastern region of Brazil, including Rio De Janeiro.
