
Sherone Simpson (left) and Asafa Powell set to run off with the RJR Sports Foundation Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards. - FileCOMMONWEALTH GAMES double gold medallists Asafa Powell and Sherone Simpson are sure bets to leave the Pegasus Hotel tonight with the 2006 RJR Sports Foundation Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards.
The function will be broadcast live on TVJ between 8:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Powell, who won the 100m and was a part of the men's 4x100m winning quartet, and Simpson, who defeated compatriot Veronica Campbell for the 200m at the Commonwealth Games and anchored Jamaica to victory in the sprint relay, are among 20 nominees for the night's top awards.
Christopher Gayle, who scored three centuries for the West Indies during the ICC Champions Trophy tournament and Brigitte Foster-Hylton, who broke the Common-wealth Games 100m hurdles record on her way to the gold medal, along with her World Cup victory, should collect the runners-up prizes at the ceremony which will feature Grenada's Prime Minister, Dr. Keith Mitchell, as the guest speaker.
The RJR Sports Foundation will also recognise outstanding performance in 2006, present 10 individuals with certificates of merit for their contributions to sports over the years and announce the winner of the special Chairman's award.
