Cop wounded by friendly fire
published: Friday | February 2, 2007

A police constable, who is still on probation, was left traumatised yesterday morning after the .38 revolver he was issued with went off and accidentally shot one of his colleagues in the guardroom at the Rollington Town Police Station, Kingston.

Reports are that the incident took place close to 10:00 a.m. It is alleged that the bullet struck the other constable in the upper leg and exited. The horrified constable who had the gun was immediately taken to the Elletson Road CIB where he was interrogated.

"We are probing the circumstances under which the policeman was shot," head of the Bureau of Special Investigation, Acting Assistant Commissioner Granville Gause, disclosed yesterday.

Not critical

A spokesperson at the Constabulary Communication Network said the injured policeman's condition was not critical. The incident attracted a large number of policemen and policewomen who rushed to the scene.

"Even some officers who were on vacation leave came to the station (Rollington Town)," said an officer who visited the scene.
