"We are going there to win. Repeat after me ... your success will depend on your mindset," said Dr. Wendel Abel as he motivated the national Under-20 players at a luncheon at the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) secretariat yesterday.

Dr. Abel, who is head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University Hospital of the West Indies, was the guest speaker as the Boyz prepared for the final CONCACAF Group B qualifiers in Mexico from February 21-25.

Twenty players were named by the JFF and they will depart the island on Monday for the tournament, where they will play Costa Rica, St. Kitts & Nevis and hosts Mexico.

"Our minds sometimes are not prepared. Your success in Mexico will not only be your ability to kick the ball and how you move on the field, an important part will be your mindset and what you carry to the game," said Dr. Abel.

"We have good footballers, but sometimes we fall apart. What we need is mental strength and stamina," added Dr. Abel.

Carlene Edwards, corporate communications coordinator of the event sponsor, Supreme Ventures Limited, said her company was happy to be on board and pleased to support the national squad that is preparing for the Under-20 World Cup to be held in Canada later this year.

Said Edwards: "Football means different things to different people. For some, it is just for fun, while for others, like the team and support staff going off, it means a real commitment and national pride in representing this wonderful country called Jamaica.

"My presence here this afternoon is indicative of the fact that Supreme Ventures Ltd. recognises and acknowledges all the efforts that go into sending this little piece of Jamaica abroad. We would like to publicly declare our appreciation for all your efforts and our commitment to support, as you strive to reach your ultimate goal, bringing the World Cup trophy to Jamaica."

Meanwhile, Crenston Boxhill, the JFF president, wished the Boyz good luck and said he was very optimistic.

Said Boxhill: "I am extremely optimistic for both our under-17s and this group, not only because they have reached this far, but I am seeing the result of our focus and vision. I say to you, the Under-20 players, you do it first and the Under-17s will follow."

Squad:

Andre Fagan, Dwayne Smith, Draion McNain, Dwayne Kerr, Dwayne Miller, Edward Campbell, Eric Vernon, James Thomas, Joel Grant, Joel Senior, Keammar Daley, Michael Binns, Montrose Phinn, Nicholas Beckett, Ricardo Cousins, Troy Smith, Alonzo Adlam, Cornelius Henry, OBrian Woodbine, Omar Persad.
