Dangerous sidewalk
published: Saturday | February 24, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I wish to bring your attention to an appalling condition that exists along High Street in Black River. In 2004 the island was hit by Hurricane Ivan. The sidewalk that runs right along the sea coast was eroded by wave action and has been left in that state from Ivan until now.

risk their lives

Pedestrians have to risk their lives daily by walking in the road way to go about their business because an enormous segment of the sidewalk is totally gone. I am very concerned for my safety and that of children who walk to and from school as well as that of pregnant ladies and senior citizens who foot it to and from the nearby hospital.

That roadway is already a narrow one and residents have to endanger their lives by walking almost in the path of vehicular traffic to navigate the eroded sidewalk.

It is nearly three years since Ivan and nothing has been done to rectify the problem. The parish council office is in proximity but they all seem to turn a blind eye. Will the parish council or the Member of Parliament do something to end this ever present danger that citizens are enduring?

I trust they'll move swiftly to correct it without playing the blame game between central and local government. Enough is enough!

I am, etc.,
