WESTERN BUREAU:Officers from the Bureau of Special Investigation journeyed to Hanover yesterday to begin a probe into Tuesday's demonstration at the Fiesta Hotel construction site, where a worker was allegedly shot by the police.
"At least two policemen have been taken off frontline duties, and the investigators will determine if others are to be removed," said Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Area One, Clifford Blake.
Meanwhile, Lincoln Robinson, press secretary to Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, confirmed that a meeting involving stakeholders scheduled for 2:30 p.m. today at Jamaica House was definitely on.
"The Prime Minister has asked Information Minister Donald Buchanan to convene the meeting. She has instructed that this meeting be held to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, and to look at a resumption of construction at the earliest opportunity," Mr. Robinson said.
Among the delegates expected to attend the meeting are Spanish Ambassador Jesus Silva, representatives of the ministries of National Security, Labour and Tourism, representatives of the Fiesta Hotel Group, Member of Parliament for Western Hanover, Barrington Grey, and Ian Hayles, People's National Party caretaker for the constituency.
Angry workers on Tuesday set fire to buildings at the site, and several vehicles belonging to the Fiesta Hotel were destroyed.
There were also reports of rampant pilfering during the demonstration, when men loaded several items on to boats. Persons were also seen stealing sheets of zinc from the premises.
The situation was subsequently brought under control by a large contingent of police personnel.
