Half of World Cup tickets sold
published: Friday | March 2, 2007

Delroy Taylor

More than 50,000 tickets for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup (CWC) were sold last month according to Delroy Taylor, project officer in charge of ticketing.

Mr. Taylor said many of these tickets were sold through the ticket centres which suggests that Caribbean nationals were the main purchasers.

Approximately 50 per cent of the CWC tickets have been sold so far and Mr. Taylor expects sales to continue at a brisk pace, especially with the opening ceremony just nine days away.

The opening ceremony is set for the newly built Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium and Mr. Taylor says "if it (ticket sales) continues at this rate, it will be a sellout."

Most prized tickets

Some 2,200 of the most prized tickets for Cricket World Cup will be resold as of today. An ICC CWC release said tickets to the finals on April 28 will be sold online and in CWC official ticket centres in the nine host venues.

Similarly, semi-final tickets are available to the general public through the same avenue. While persons who have not previously bought any CWC tickets will now be eligible to buy tickets for the final, there will still be a maximum limit of four per person.

Before the tournament officially opens March 11, there will be a series of warm-up games beginning March 5. One of these matches pits the West Indies against India at the Trelawny Multi-purposes Stadium and it is expected to be no less exciting than a tournament match.

Mr. Taylor says ticket sales for these warm-up games, in particular the big game scheduled for March 9, is encouraging and he expects it to get even better as the tournament gets closer.
