Gov't should introduce ID cards
published: Sunday | March 4, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Maybe it is time the Govern-ment introduced compulsory ID cards for every Jamaican. It is very obvious some people don't have a clue why they were issued with ID cards in the first place or else we wouldn't see one person shot and offices and motor vehicles destroyed during the violent demonstration at the Fiesta Hotel construction site.

In Belgium

An ID card is compulsory in Belgium and one is legally obliged to carry it at all times. Children age 12 or under should carry their name cards with them at all times whennot in their parents' company. It is also important that they have it when participating in group activities organised by the local authorities or schools. People are turned away from the hospital in Belgium because they don't have their ID cards with them.

It is very important that people think twice and use diplomacy to solve problems instead of brute force. Do we ever wonder why people don't want to come to Jamaica to do business? That is their livelihood they are burning down because of pure ignorance. What do you think when other business people read this in their respective countries?

I am, etc.,
