The Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC) has added its voice to the ongoing row over liquefied natural gas (LNG) promised to Jamaica by Trinidad and Tobago. The JCC says it is time for the Trinidad Government to give its official position on the agreement made between the countries last year to provide 1.1 million tonnes to the country for Alcoa's billion dollar upgrade project. The Chamber says the agreement could rupture Jamaica's development and threaten the future of the CARICOM Single Market which came on stream last year.
The Chamber also suggested Trinidad was being unfair to Jamaica because it enjoys a healthy trade surplus and investment relationship with the island while it remains difficult for Jamaicans to start businesses in the twin island republic.
"The perception of a large segment of the Jamaican business sector is that, it has always been difficult to trade with Trinidad, because non-tariff barriers are used to block the entry of Jamaican goods and services into Trinidad, even while there is the expectation that Trinidad will have free access to the Jamaican market," the Chamber said.
