Woolmer focused on beating Ireland, Zimbabwe
published: Saturday | March 17, 2007

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

DESPITE SEEING his team fall 54 runs short against the West Indies in the opening game of the World Cup, Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer does not believe they need to press the panic button just yet.

Let's put it in perspective. We have only played one game in the World Cup and we lost a game in which the West Indies played really well, Woolmer pointed out as the team practised at the Kensington Oval.

They bowled very tightly and managed to restrict our top batsmen. If they continue to play that way they will do very well in this tournament,? he said.

However, that does not mean that the same thing will happen in every game and right now our focus is squarely on beating both Zimbabwe and Ireland.

A poor batting performance is generally agreed to be the reason that Pakistan lost their first game of the tournament. However, the coach does believe that there isn?t a need for any significant change to the batting line-up.

We've had our discussions and we agree 242 was a very makeable total on that pitch,Woolmer said.

Like I said, we got a bit bogged down by some good bowling and right now our focus is centred around not making mistakes again, he said.

However, the Pakistan boss also believes that knowing when to change gear will have a part to play in doing well in the World Cup.

In this tournament it will be important to know when to switch on and when to switch off.

?We need to know when to relax. We had a nice training session, the guys are fit and preparations are going well for our next game,? he said.
