Green goals or oil exploration
published: Sunday | March 25, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

I often hear that Jamaica is striving to be a 'green' destination, a choice I would applaud since it would be betterfor our own health and well-being, as well as serve the growing numbers of people worldwide who are becoming more environmentally conscious.

I wonder, therefore, why we are considering engaging in 'oil exploration' - a very 'ungreen' activity. This would not only be a 'turn-off' for the environmentally concerned tourist, but could easily endanger our natural beauties and largely pristine waters.

Would it not make more sense in the long run and be more in harmony with these 'green' goals to spend our time, energy and money to gradually go completely solar, wind and water to provide our own energy?

I hope the powers that be will research the worldwide reports of disastrous pollution and toxic results from this diminishing oil resource and carefully reconsider.

I am, etc.,
