British Airways resumed direct flights to Trinidad this week for the first time in 13 years under a code share agreement with the newly formed Caribbean Airlines. The agreement, which was signed in November last year, also means that Caribbean Airlines, which replaced the debt-ridden national airline, BWIA, will no longer be flying direct from Port of Spain to London.
The deal between the two airlines took effect on Tuesday and British Airways will begin direct flights every Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
British Airways had its last direct flight to Port of Spain from London in 1994.
Under the accord, Caribbean Airlines will provide that service on the other weekdays utilising the Port of Spain to London route via Barbados.
"Caribbean Airlines will also stand to gain financially from all seats booked on the service," the airline's chief executiveofficer Peter Davies said, noting that the partnership would provide customers with increased consistency and a higher quality of service at competitive prices.
