The Editor, Sir:As a teacher I have to ask myself, what is the education system coming to and what are our rights in the classroom. Violence is infesting our society and hence our children. Some students in the schools have no respect for authority and they behave in an indecent manner in the presence of both adults and children.
Teachers, along with being under pressure to submit plans, complete the syllabus and keep records, are constantly faced with the duties of maintaining order, ensuring that students are appropriately dressed for school and not to mention the everyday quelling of violent flare-ups during class, on the coridors or at the school gate.
Disrispectful behaviour
The students are constantly fighting and disrespecting teachers and authorities in the process and nothing forceful is being done about it. They are suspended for a few days then they return to perpetrate the same 'crime' again. I am not saying to expel them every time they become violent, but the ministry has to step in and implement a programme to curb the behaviour or these students.
Let them know that they are wrongdoers and teach them to behave within the acceptable norms of society or else these children may be the same ones that will infest our society with more crime and violence in the near future.
I am, etc.,
