'Progress in malaria control' - Minister expects non-endemic declaration soon; pushes for improved systems on World Health Day
Government is expecting Jamaica to, in short order, be once again declared a non-endemic country for malaria, according to Health Minister Horace Dalley. Minister Dalley told Parliament's Standing Finance Committee this week that a team from the United States-based Centres for Disease Control would be arriving in Jamaica within two weeks to assess the country's response to the recent malaria outbreak.

Special educators to target illiteracy in schools

A link between illiteracy and violence in schools has raised concerns which the Ministry of Education and Youth hopes to address through the introduction of more than 100 special educators.

'Little interest in Coroner's Court'

The backlog of more than 3,500 cases in the Coroner's Court is primarily the result of a pile up in mostly non-criminal cases and a lack of witnesses for others, according to Justice Minister Senator A.J. Nicholson. Mr. Nicholson, who is also the Attorney-General, was responding to questions from Opposition member Clive Mullings during Wednesday night's session of Parliament's Standing Finance Committee.

RM reverses decision, completes case

Resident Magistrate Carol Edwards, who decided last year not to continue a trial after the complainant, businesswoman Kimberly Adamou, raised certain objections, reversed her decision on Thursday and completed the trial.

Leslie Robinson lauded by UWI

The University of the West Indies (UWI) has described the late Professor Leslie Robinson as an outstanding example for young Caribbean scholars and to whose brilliant academic skills the university is indebted. Professor Robinson, who was the first to be appointed principal of the UWI, Mona campus, died on Wednesday. He was 82.

United Kingdom/Jamaica Diaspora establishing youth arm

The Jamaica Diaspora, United Kingdom chapter is seeking to engage more youths in the movement, arising from a resolution at the Jamaica Diaspora Conference held in Kingston last year. A preliminary meeting is to be held at the Jamaica High Commission in London on April 13 to form the UK/Jamaica Diaspora youth group.

Convicted drug dealer killed, Pimp Juice franchise owner shot

East Kingston strongman and convicted drug dealer, Errol Laze, otherwise known as Bobby Reds, was one of two men killed during an attack by gunmen at premises on Balmoral Avenue in St. Andrew on Wednesday night.
