Commanding Light, Dancing Sam set for Sprint battle

The second and final leg of the two-day Easter Racing Carnival is on at Caymanas Park today, the nine-race programme featuring the Easter Sprint Cup overnight allowance race over 1100 metres.

Significantly, this race should have been the secondary feature to the Legal Light Trophy (graded stakes) which was also scheduled for today. However, the Legal Light Trophy fell through when one of the five horses nominated at the overnight stage - ALLIEDFORCE - was scratched.

The promoters reserve the right to abandon a race with fewer than five horses.

The Easter Sprint Cup has attracted 10 starters, including top contenders COMMANDING LIGHT, DANCING SAM and BULLET TRAIN.

All three have proved competitive in recent races and the winner will more than likely come from this trio, even though others such as KYSHA BABY, FREE FALL, DIESEL and the super fit hat-trick seeker TALLAWAH will have their supporters.

The Philip Feanny-trained DIESEL is a proven campaigner at this level, but his cupboard has been bare for some time owing to a tardy habit at the start of his race, a luxury he can ill-afford today.

Under a cloud

Gary Subratie's KYSHA BABY has been under a cloud since December of last year, but was not beaten far by DOUBLE BOW in a fast-run straight five race on March 24 and could be on the way back. She could make it close with former champion Trevor Simpson aboard.

While it is hoped that DIESEL and KYSHA BABY will give of their best, there is little doubt that DANCING SAM, COMMANDING LIGHT and the fleet-footed BULLET TRAIN are coming to run.

BULLET TRAIN was beaten into fourth place by NASATOL over the distance on March 3 in the Wayne DaCosta Trophy run in honour of his trainer, but both DANCING SAM and COMMANDING LIGHT were ahead of him that day and he could fall victim to one, or both, on this occasion. Hence, I expect DANCING SAM and COMMANDING LIGHT to fight out the finish.

DANCING SAM failed by only half a length to stave off NASATOL and in the process was a length ahead of COMMANDING LIGHT in third. I expect it to be closer this time around.

However, with COMMANDING LIGHT coming back to finish a close second to out-of-class CALABASH BAY over 1200 metres on March 10, this American bred filly seems ready to reverse the placings with the Noel Ennevor-trained DANCING SAM.

Other firm fancies on the card, which commences at 1:00 p.m., are FORMULA ONE (enjoying good form) to catch HAFFIFA and SUPER NATURAL in the fourth over the straight five course, BLACK RIVER (nicely in at the weights) to win the sixth, RED OCTOBER to go one better in the seventh, and recent winner ARCHANGEL to do likewise in the nightpan.
