An autopsy was yesterday conducted on the body of slain policeman Constable Michael Haughton, who was killed by gunmen.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of crime, Denver Frater, told The Gleaner yesterday that the post-mortem report should be ready today. He said the post-mortem would also identify the type of weapon that was used.

He said the revolvers of the policemen who were with Constable Haughton on the foot patrol were also taken and sent to the ballistics lab for testing.

He, however, pointed out that this was standard procedure.

Foot patrol

Constable Haughton was allegedly shot by gunmen in the Payne Avenue, Kingston 11, area about 9:30 Sunday night while on a foot patrol of the area. Explosions were reportedly heard in the area and the police went to investigate.

They were fired on by a group of gunmen near the basic school in the community. Constable Haughton was hit in the back and died the following morning while being treated at the Kingston Public Hospital. His other colleagues were not harmed.

Constable Haughton became the eighth policeman to have been killed since the start of the year.
