The Editor, Sir:It amazes me that whenever there is a situation of abuse or any inappropriate action, it is always against poor black people. What about the poor brown people and the poor white people? Mr. Smith, the representative for the Jamaica Labour Party, mentioned that under the JLP, poor black people will not be beaten by the police "not that innocent people will not be beaten," so under the JLP, it will be OK to beat all other skin colour of people of who make up the whole body of our beautiful country.
You see this letter is being written with a lot of emotions because I happen to be born with a lighter skin hue than the Jamaican Mr. Smith speaks of. Does that make me any less of a Jamaican than a black brother or sister of the land from which I was born and love?
Remove the mask
Today I call on all Jamaicans to put aside and remove the mask from our eyes and see that there are a lot of poor suffering brown, light-skinned Jamaicans who are ignored and pounced on. For God knows that the skin hue that one is born with, he or she has no control over. In the same breath, it amazes me to see that as soon as one has reached a point of success in life, they are gravitated by the opposite complexion.
I appeal to all Jamaicans, let us unite and realise we are all one people with one country and stop allowing ourselves to be slaves to hate. May God bless us to love each other for the common purpose of a united Jamaica, the land we love.
I am, etc.,
Concerned Jamaican
