Partial cellphone ban in schools
published: Monday | April 23, 2007

GEORGETOWN (CMC):

The Guyana Government has placed restrictions on students' use of mobile phones during school sessions amid concerns that the practice has been disrupting learning.

While the restrictions, which came into effect Friday, do not extend to educators, "they (teachers) are expected to lead by example," Education Minister Shaik Baksh told journalists Friday.

The move followed several meetings between Education Ministry officials and school administrators who complained that students' use of mobile phones at school had become a nuisance.

"It can be a real distraction to pupils in classrooms. Instead of concentrating on what is being taught you find students just fighting with their phones," a primary school educator told CMC.
