
DAVIS Telecommunications giants Cable & Wireless Jamaica (CWJ) continued its perennial trend of assisting local institutions fund their way to the renowned Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, United States, when it handed out cheques totalling $480,000 to 16 teams.
During the presentation fun-ction, which took place at the company's corporate headquarters at Carlton Crescent yesterday morning, president and chief executive officer (CEO), Rodney Davis, handed cheques of $30,000 each to the teams.
They are Alpha, Ardenne, Boys' Champs winners Calabar, Clan Carthy, St. George's College, Herbert Morrison, Girl's Champs winners Holmwood, Jamaica College (JC), Kingston College (KC), Manchester, Mona, The Queen's School, St. Andrew High, St. Jago, University of Technology and Wolmer's.
Davis said he is pleased to help support sports in Jamaica.
"Cable & Wireless has been helping to send athletes to these games for more than 15 years and we will continue to do so as part of our efforts to provide young Jamaicans with opportunities to develop and grow and parade their world class talent," he said.
"We are proud to support these young athletes who no doubt will continue Jamaica's tradition of producing premier international athletes and we expect great things from the next generation," Davis added.
Keen gesture
Responding on behalf of the teams Claudette Keen, vice-principal at Herbert Morrison, thanked Cable & Wireless for what she described as a "keen gesture".
"I am sure the kids are going to make Jamaica proud," she told Davis, who had earlier said he knew Jamaica would continue to dominate the United States.
