STETHS take lead in close Cup battle

ST. ELIZABETH:

ST. Elizabeth High School (STETHS) got first innings points, but Eltham fought back in the second innings of the Grace Spaulding Cup play-off on the second day at STETHS, in Santa Cruz, yesterday.

The home team resumed the day's play at 10 for two and were bowled out for 119 to earn first innings points with a small lead of 37 runs. Christopher Dyer, who was caught off the bowling of Fredrick Hermitt, top scored with 37 while Derval Green, 31, and Richard Simpson 14, were the only other batsmen to make meaningful scores.

On Wednesday, national youth player Romeo Duncan was the star performer with the ball for STETHS as he claimed five wickets for 14 runs off 11.5 overs.

He got the scalps of Nick Blackwood, 0, Nickoy Samuels, 0, Paul Palmer, four, Ishmeal Parchment, seven, and Donovan Nelson, 0. He was well supported by Hermitt 3-39 and Sandre Watson 2-35.

At stumps yesterday, Eltham had reached 91 for four in their second innings for a lead of 54 heading into the final day. The wickets took a long time to come for the Headley Cup champions.

Matthew Stewart was the first to go, caught off the bowling of Nelson for 19. Richard Simpson took the wickets of national Youth player Shacoya Thomas for nought and Kino-Paul Salesman for 23, while Jason Dawes got the wicket of Shane Harris.
