Violence begets violence
published: Saturday | May 5, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

The recent spate of incidents involving alleged homosexuals being attacked and beaten by angry persons shows that Jamaicans on a whole are finding it increasingly difficult to tolerate this behaviour.

The act of homosexuality in itself is immoral and biologically incorrect, but this does not give us the right to respond violently. However, Earl Witter, Public Defender, was totally correct by saying, "Hold your corner", in other words, do not impose your lifestyle on others who find it offensive.

Jamaicans are naturally homophobic and intolerant towards homosexuals. Those individuals and groups that are clamouring for the acceptance of homosexuality must be reminded that Jamaica is Jamaica! Where Jamaicans are concerned, we can be tolerant in other countries where homosexuality is the norm, but when it comes to our country, that is where the battle lines are drawn.

The problem persons are having is that homosexuals want to show this in-your-face attitude to parade to everyone that they are coming out, like it or not.

Homosexuals must remember that every time they parade themselves publicly, it always ends in a violent confrontation.

Attack on newspaper

It was reported that two alleged homosexuals attacked offices of The Western Mirror newspaper in response to an article that was published stating that gay men were purchasing female underwear. Now if homosexuals themselves are not better than the angry mob by resorting to violence, then why should we be sympathetic when they are attacked and beaten? One must remember violence begets violence and for homosexuals responding that way, it does not augur well for them in the future.

What should I tell my seven and six-year-old boys, that it is acceptable for persons of the same sex to be allowed in public to demonstrate their affection to one another? As a parent, I am worried that our society has lost its way, that the moral fibre, values and the attitude that once stood prominently would be a thing of the past. People of power, money and influence have sought profoundly to change the world for their own hedonistic agenda and the strong Christian principles are being challenged to accept deviant behaviour.

I am, etc.,
