DISCARDED WEST Indies batsman Marlon Samuels highlighted yesterday's opening round of the Super Cup with an impressive double century for Melbourne against Trelawny at Melbourne Oval.
Samuels, who has been in and out of the regional side, took out his frustration on the north-coast side in a brutal manner with an unbeaten 205 as the hosts closed on 456 for seven.
Samuels, who struck 19 fours and sixsixes off 236 balls in his 278 minutes at the crease, shared in two important partnerships - 150 for the sixth wicket with Yanick Elliott, who made 62, and 105 for the fifth wicket with captain Carlton Baugh, who compiled 49.
Lorenzo Ingram was the pick of the bowlers for Westmoreland with 2-78.
Meanwhile, Chris Gayle and Daren Powell, who will depart the island tomorrow for the tour of England, also had good outings for Lucas and Kensington, respectively.
At Chedwin Park, Gayle scored an undefeated 56 as Lucas were 90 for four when rain stopped play at lunch.
Hat-trick delivery
Jermaine Lawson, who was unlucky not to pick up the wicket of Gayle with a hat-trick delivery, had taken 2-13. André Russell had 2-17.
At Kensington Park, despite Powell's 6-88, Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) took first innings points from Kensington.
Kensington were dismissed for 100 with Wayne Cuff (4-26) and Kamal Dennis (4-27) taking the bulk of the wickets.
In reply, JDF were dismissed for 230. Joseph Palmer, 53, top scored as Gavaska Brown (2-50) supported Powell.
At Kirkvine, Westmoreland were 129 for nine in their match against Manchester when rain stopped play at 2:10 p.m.
Dwayne Ewart, who came in one down, was not out on 59. Neive McNally had claimed 5-32.
At Sabina Park, Kingston held the upper hand against St. Elizabeth.
Kingston were dismissed for 243 after fighting back from 125 for six.
Kerry Scott, 66, and Fabian Forbes, 56, were responsible for the recovery as they put on 100 for the seventh wicket.
Chadwick Walton, in his first game for Kingston after moving from Lucas, made 52.
Howard Powell (3-31), Shawn Findlay (3-48), Linton Buchanan (2-55) and Ainsley Goss (2-21) were the wicket takers.
