Quitting the gay wagon
published: Wednesday | May 16, 2007

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHAT IN the world is going on in Jamaica today? Everyone andhis brother man quoting scriptures, offering arguments about homosexuality?

Whoa up the mules; it's time to get off the wagon before it gets to the cliff! Nobody is telling you that you have to accept homosexuality and nobody is about to force such a thing on your children! Believe what you like; whether it's a lifestyle choice or a biological reality is not important. There just aren't that many gay people in the world to worry about it!

Jamaica is supposed to be a Christian nation and even if stoning someone to death didn't go against the teachings of Jesus, it's still a crime to commit assault or murder, at least in a civilised society, regardless of who the victim is, isn't it? Now, if you're going to go roaming the streets searching for people who look like, or are even suspected of being homosexual, what's next on the list? Effeminate men? Masculine-looking women? How about people who don't dress the same as you? How about people who aren't your colour? Where does it end?

As if alcohol, drug, and spousal abuse, crime, parental neglect, poverty, poor education, high unemployment, corruption and gun murder aren't enough for a developing nation, how can Jamaicans, and especially Jamaicans, go on acting like those same stupid, fascist, bigoted white men in the Southern United States a half-century ago who strung up gays even faster than black men?

'Out of Many One People' indeed, what hypocrisy!

I am, etc.,
