BELEM, Brazil (CMC):

Jamaica's Commonwealth Games sprint champion Sheri-Ann Brooks copped the sprint double as Caribbeanathletes scored eight championship wins at the IAAF Belem Grand Premio track and field meeting on Sunday.

Brooks recorded near personal best times of 11.21 seconds for the 100 metres and 22.87 in the half-lap sprint to emerge the sprint star of the meet.

Jamaicans were also strong in the men's sprints, securing both the 100 and 200-metre titles, through Nesta Carter and Ricardo Williams, respectively, while local hero Jadel Gregorio produced the perfor-mance of the meet, landing the men's triple jump at a world leading 17.90 metres.

Brooks, the 100-metre champion at the Commonwealth Games in Australia last year, dominated the 100 metres in 11.21 seconds, just 0.02 off her personal record.

Her 200-metre time also not far from her PR 22.80 and the US Virgin Islands LaVerne Jones chased her for second in both events. Jones clocked 11.43 in the 100 and 22.95 in the 200 metres.

Solid

Carter followed up his fine win at the Fortaleza meet last week with a 10.20 clocking, topping fellow Jamaican Ainsley Waugh (10.28), with Canada's Anson Henry third in 10.30.

Williams also looked solid in his 200-metre triumph in 20.35 seconds, followed home by local star Vicente de Lima (20.56).

There was another major Caribbean win when Trinidad and Tobago's Sherridan Kirk captured the men's 800 metres, while Cuban Yoel Hernandez and Jamaican Dean Griffiths collected the men's hurdles titles on offer.

Kirk won the two-lap event in one minute 46.90 seconds, chased by a pair of Brazilians Kleberson Davide (1:47.12) and Fabiano Pecanha (1:47.44).

Hernandez (13.48) defeated Brazilian Anselmo da Silva (13.56) in the sprint hurdles, and Griffiths, a former US Collegiate champion, took the 400 hurdles in 49.49 seconds, defeating American LaBronze Garrett (49.67).

The Cuban Guillermo Martinez delivered the eighth Caribbean victory when he won the javelin at 83.94 metres.
