Except for in a few communities, fun and frolic overshadowed Labour Day activities in Montego Bay yesterday as, rather than engaging in facelifting work, many opted to spend the day on the beach.
When The Gleaner visited the St. James parish project, Montego Bay's historic Dome on Creek Street, at 10:00 a.m., the rustic monument, which was expected to be buzzing with activity, stood out like an unwanted child in the early morning sun, totally devoid of any life.
Awaiting instruction
In a subsequent visit to the St. James Parish Council building to ascertain the reason for the inactivity at the Dome, workers, who were seen passing time in a leisurely conversation in front of the building, said they were awaiting instruction and material from council officials. Shortly before midday, staff members from various banks, civic groups and the parish council were seen painting the barrier around the Dome as well as the adjacent pedestrian crossing.
At the popular Aquasol Theme Park, the entrance to the facility was jam-packed with young revellers who opted for relaxation instead of work.
"If yu working every day and you get a day off you would be fool to spend it working," said a young man, with a beach towel slung around his neck. "Today is a day for rest and relaxation so I will be chilling out on the beach."
