The Editor, Sir:
The column by Heather Robinson in Friday's Gleaner entitled "Discovering Jamaica" has prompted me to add my views on the subject. I grew up in Jamaica but did not know and appreciate our beautiful island until I returned from my migrated residence in the U.K. I believe this is true for many Jamaicans who have returned from abroad.
I have over recent times had the opportunity to travel to all parishes of Jamaica, savouring the beauty of the countryside and all its natural resources, including some very interesting personalities. This has led me to write several poems on areas of this lovely jewel in the Caribbean Sea called Jamaica.
There is so much positive interest in this country. I would urge journalists and other media personalities to make concerted efforts to highlight the very beautiful sights and scenery around Jamaica, mostly natural, but even the man-made ones.
Instead of people abroad reading and hearing only the negative occurrences, it would augur well in projecting a better image of Jamaica if our journalists, media persons, politicians and so-called experts start to elevate and voice the positives of our country.
It could also help to instil a more caring attitude in our people by realising the damage done by dumping rubbish all over the place which, as most of us know, blocks drains, rivers and streams, causing floods, not to mention the disgusting habit of dropping litter on streets and walkways. Our country is beautiful and should be cared for by all.
I am, etc.,
