Swift triumph for Solis
published: Monday | June 18, 2007

ANKARA, Turkey (CMC):

Big Cuban Olympic heavyweight boxing champion Odlanier Solis fashioned another swift win as he continued his professional career at the Ataturk Sport Arena on Saturday.

Solis, who defected to the USA and turned professional earlier this year with other Cuban Athens gold medallists Yan Barthelemy and Yuriorkis Gamboa, needed less than one round to whip Ukraines Alex Mazikin.

Barthelemy and Gamboa also registered wins on the card.

Solis moved his record to 2-0 with two knockouts when he demolished the strong Russian Mazikin in 43 seconds.

Mazikins record now slips to 10 wins against two losses.

Flyweight Barthelemy defeated Ukraines Gennadiy Delisandrau on points and Gamboa stopped the Czech Republics Araik Sachbazjan in four rounds.

In the main event on the card, former world champion and current World Boxing Council (WBC) No.4 contender Oliver McCall, of the USA, upset hometown favourite and WBC No.2 Sinan Samil Sam by unanimous decision.

The 42-year-old McCall triumphed by scores of 115-112, 115-112, 114-113 to earn a WBC title shot.
