Ban political motorcades
published: Tuesday | June 19, 2007

Dear Editor, Sir:

Will both political parties be able to take charge of their supporters, and work closely with their opponents and with the police in order to minimise political violence and to reduce tension?

Based on history, and an incident which occurred recently, there were people who are supportive of one party interfering with their opponent on the motorcade campaign trail. From past experience, this is a recipe for disaster based on the bad behaviour, mob attitude, among other things, that accompany political motorcades.

We expect our security forces to do their best in maintaining law and order. By all means, they should, but, it will be a challenge based on the lawless environment of a campaign - it can be a difficult task to arrest people for breaches of the law. Therefore, the Electoral Commission, Political Ombudsman, heads of security forces and both political leaders should take a serious look and ponder this idea: Should political motorcades be banned or closely monitored?

I am, etc.,

CHARLES BROWN
