Jamaica Labour Party leader, Bruce Golding (second right) and Sally Porteous (third left), JLP candidate for Central Manchester, are flanked by party supporters during a tour of the constituency last week Thursday. - Ian Allen/Staff Photographer Opposition Leader Bruce Golding says the inequitable distribution of resources to carry out infrastructure works in constituencies would be a thing of the past under a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) administration.
Addressing supporters in Mocho, Clarendon, Thursday night, Mr. Golding promised that a JLP government would set aside $150 millionin the budget to be shared equally among the 60 constituencies to effect road repairs, provide water and other community infrastructure.
Starved of funds
He accused the Government of carrying out extensive road repairs in constituencies represented by the People's National Party (PNP), while Opposition MPs were starved of funds to fix roads in their areas.
"When we take out that money, wi nuh gwan partial to neither PNP nor JLP. Whether the constituency have a PNP or JLP MP, the same money (is) going to be provided," he said.
Mr. Golding charged that the Capital Development Fund (CDF), was not being used to develop mined-out bauxite communities. "You can't come in and take out the bauxite and after you gone with the bauxite, them still don't have nuh road, nuh water, nuh basic school," he added.
He said a JLP government would use money from the CDF to redevelop those areas where bauxite mining had taken place.
Meanwhile, the top brass of the JLP is predicting a general election within five to six weeks. In that regard, the Opposition Leader repeated his pledge to remove school fees at the start of the new school year in September.
And, on July 1, the Opposition says it will stage the first of its mass rallies in Mandeville, Manchester.
Central Manchester, a constituency being closely watched in the upcoming election, will see the JLP's Sally Porteous doing battle against the PNP's Peter Bunting. The seat is currently held by outgoing MP, John Junor.
Meanwhile, the PNP has summoned all candidates to a meeting today to discuss the state of readiness of each candidate for the general election.
Tomorrow, party president, Portia Simpson Miller will address the National Executive Council of the PNP at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston.
