'St Bess' set to run away with crown
published: Saturday | June 23, 2007

Leaders St. Elizabeth could crown themselves Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) Super Cup champions with victory over the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) at Alpart this weekend.

In the two-day match, which starts at 10:00 a.m. today, full points for St. Elizabeth over the JDF, on 13 points, would take them to 29 points.

At the same time, St. Elizabeth would have to hope that defending champions St. Catherine Cricket Club (13) and Westmoreland (13), both lingering in mid-pack, take first innings or full points from serious contenders Manchester and Melbourne, both on 20 points each.

If this happens, Manchester and Melbourne, who will both host Kensington and St. Elizabeth in next week's final round, would be unable to catch the leaders.

A team gets six points for an outright win, three for first innings and one for both a no-result and loss of first innings points.

Top three

Realistically, only the top three, St. Elizabeth, Manchester and Melbourne seem to have a chance of winning the league right now.

In the meantime, St. Elizabeth will be banking on top batsmen Shawn Findlay and Shane Powell, both whom scored centuries this season, to lead the charge.

Findlay and Powell should get support from Howard Powell, Damion Ebanks and Davian Davidson in the batting department, while off-spinner Wayne Simpson, who has been enjoying a very good season, will spearhead the bowling.

Ainsley Goss, Howard Powell and Findlay should also contribute in the bowling department.

Visitors JDF have Chacon Chambers, a former Holmwood schoolboy, Joseph Palmerand Bereston Reid as its top batsmen this season.

They should get support from Mel Wint, Damion Grey and Mark Grey, along with pacers Warren Medwinter, Kamal Dennis, Howard Copeland and Fabian Anderson, along with spinners Mark Grey and Akhbar Moodie.
