Jamaica: One big comic strip
published: Monday | June 25, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

A few weeks ago the Director of Public Prosecutions recommended hanging in the square as a deterrent to murder, he does not seems to recognise that the murderers are not being caught and even when caught, would certainly not be hanged and possibly released into the society to a heroic welcome. In The Gleaner of June 21, here is Senator Norman Grant with a most misguided suggestion - that the voting age should be lowered to 16 years. He must be considering a way to fill Parliament with deejays, beauty queens, dancehall queens, dons or some of their favourite foreign artistes and put himself and others out of a job.

According to another local newspaper, a magistrate is recommending the use of chastity belts by women to prevent sexual abuse of women by men. This gadget, I am certain, if taken to the relevant Chinese manufacturer, a few containers would be soon available for sale at many wholesales and at stop lights, this time in plastic, not the mediaeval heavy metal with a built-in combination lock known only to the authorised male or males.

I think we need to start thinking seriously how to deal with the problems that face us and stop the sound bites that give the impression that Jamaica is one big comic strip.

I am, etc.,
