Portia and the number seven
published: Sunday | July 22, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

My grandfather must be turning in his grave knowing that the Prime Minister of Jamaica wants the country to hand her another term in office because of connections she claims she has with the number seven. My grandfather was adamant that black people should be studying science, technology, and business and considered obeah and numerology backwardness. What’s ironic is that the PM’s affair with numerology could cost the PNP the election. That’s because numerologists, through their art, could offer the PM as a saviour, or the coming 666 beast.

Numerologists have named various individuals as the 666 beast by the number of letters in the individual’s name. Former U.S president Ronald Reagan was identified as the beast. With the same reasoning, our PM, Portia Simpson Miller, could be identified as the beast as well. ‘Simson’ is a form of ‘Simpson’, so ‘Portia ‘Simpson’ Miller’ is equal to ‘Portia Simson Miller’. Hence, substituting ‘Simson’ for ‘Simpson’, each portion of her name has six letters thus, the PM could be identified by some as the 666 beast. Even ‘Sister Portia Miller’ has six letters in each part of the name – again 666. If we should accept this reasoning of numerology, then we would be better off not voting PNP on election day.

Deaths

As far as her connection with the number seven, I am disappointed that the PM and Dr. Phinn have not done their homework. U.S.A’s seventh president, Andrew Jackson, was born in 1767 (all the sum 1+7+6+7 add to 7+7+7). On his first try for the presidency he won the popular vote but did not have enough electoral votes to win the presidency, and it is claimed that he was responsible for the eventual deaths of 4,000 Cherokee Indians. Henry the VII did not become king on first try, but was chased to France. There are Seven Wonders of the World and Seven Blunders: Wealth without work, pleasure without conscience, knowledge without character, commerce without morality, science without humanity, worship without sacrifice, and last, my favourite, which seems to echo well in Jamaica is, politics without principle.

There are seven letters in each of the names ‘Golding’ and ‘Jamaica.’ ‘27th Golding Jamaica’ is 27-77 or 2-777. According to the science of the PM and Dr. Phinn, it appears the JLP should be the next government.

I feel my grandfather gave good advice so I don’t believe that the Hon. PM is any type of beast. However, a good leader would expect her people to be analytical and logical in making their choices on election day, would prove that she is the best candidate based on merit, and wouldn’t attempt to fool them with numeric concoctions.

I am, etc.,

JOHN MARTIN
