Stop playing blame games
published: Wednesday | July 25, 2007

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WE HEAR complaints daily how corrupt 'govament' is. However, we fail to remember that it is not the 60 MPs that make up the Government in the true sense of the word. Let us stop playing blame games. How many of us pay to pass defective vehicles or because we can't wait at the motor vehicle depot, purchase licences, etc.

How many big businesses, wholesales have two books, running an official book for tax and the private one not shown to the tax auditors. How many of us ask the officer 'beg yuh a bly nuh' after breaking the law? Or start the mansion without the necessary permits and, if given, deviate from the plans.

How many of us try to bindle our way through life on a daily basis?

We need to take responsibility for our actions. Too many of us blame politicians as if they are the ones that run every government department and sign off on every document. No, they are not exempt from blame, but which officer/unit in the Ministry of Education was fired for creating the GSAT fiascos we have had for two consecutive years, or the unneces-sary cost overruns on the dozens of projects across the various ministries.

Let us stop laying blame and self-reflect on what are the ways we personally contribute to the "high level of corruption"

It is only when we stop practising and supporting corruption that we have the right to blast off about corruption.

I am, etc.,
