Jamaica draw
published: Tuesday | July 31, 2007

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (CMC):

An impressive five-wicket haul by Terrance Ward and a hard-fought half century from Andre Creary brightened the final day of the drawn second-round TCL West Indies Under-19 Challenge match between Jamaica and the Leeward Islands yesterday.

Playing at Warner Park, Ward grabbed five for 62 as Jamaica declared their second innings at 220 for nine, setting the Leewards a victory target of 181. The Kittitian off-break bowler was well supported by medium pacer Kelbert Walters who claimed two for 55.

Jamaica's total of 220 was built around the batting of Creary who made an impressive unbeaten 59. The little right hander came to crease with his team ahead by 36 runs and was still there when the declaration came at the tea interval. Creary batted for a shade over three hours and faced 141 balls, striking six boundaries.

Horace Miller (38), Shacaya Thomas (38) and Christie Jones (32)all perished in the 30s after doing the initial hard work. In reply, the Leewards were 31 without loss at the close.

AT CONAREE SPORTS CLUB: Barbados captain Sharmarh Brooks turned in another fine all-round performance, but his efforts were all in vain as his side was beaten by six wickets by Trinidad and Tobago in their round-two fixture yesterday.

Barbados, in arrears by 224 runs on first innings, resumed on 209 for four and were eventually dismissed for 312, leaving T&T a relatively easy victory target of 89. Brooks hit the top score for Barbados of 76. He received solid support from Amal Nurse (22) and Shamar Cooke (21).

Talented off-spinner Varoon Samaroo was the top bowler for T&T with six wickets for 89 runs to end with a match haul of 10 for 109.

In pursuit of their victory target, T&T stumbled to 66 for four, but Alden Daniel (23 not out) and Darren Bravo (13 not out) saw them home safely. Brooks took three for 19. Scores in the match: Barbados 81 and 312; T&T 305 and 91 for four.

At Cayon Sports Complex: Guyana completed an eight-wicket victory over Windward Islands on the third day of their second round match yesterday.
