  • Westchester trounce Hellshire 8-0

    Westchester Football Club went on a goal-scoring spree trouncing Hellshire United 8-0 as the Linford Jones U-13 Football League kicked off at the Portsmouth playing field on Tuesday.

    Westchester were led by a hat-trick, in just seven minutes, from Kemar Phillpott (52nd, 55th, and 59th). There were also double strikes from Jonathan Tracey (2nd, 42nd), and Ramone Howell (13th, 29th), while a lone goal was netted by Clay Pusey in the 16th minute giving Westchester their handsome win.

    In the feature match of the double header Passagefort FC and Rodwood played to an exciting 0-0 draw.

    Meanwhile, in another recent game defending champions Passagefort United and newcomers Roma played out a 1-1 stalemate.

    The competition continues this Tuesday, with three games at the Westchester playing field.

  • Power of Faith top awards

    Power of Faith Junior cricketers dominated the 2007 Dr. Delford Davis Portmore Church Twenty20 Cricket League with three major awards.

    Power of Faith Juniors all-rounder, Peter Harrison, won two awards - the best batsman after scoring 93 runs in five innings and best all-rounder. He captured six wickets and conceded 87 runs in five matches at an average of 6.6 runs per wicket.

    Harrison's teammate, fast bowler Jermaine Grant, was the best bowler of the competition. In five games, he copped nine wickets and conceded 83 runs, at an average of 4.15 runs per wicket.

    Power of Faith's senior team, copped two major awards, the biggest being the Dr. Delford Davis trophy for excellence for winning the league, and the best bowling figures for a match, which was Richard McIntosh who bagged four for six off four overs, at an average of 1.5.

    Power of Faith Junior Robert Williams received two man-of-the-match awards and the senior team's Terrence Francis was voted man of the match for the final.

    Meanwhile, Bishop Dr. Delford Davis, who sponsored the league, said that sports was one way of winning souls for the Kingdom of God.

    Mark Williamson, captain of Power of Faith senior and coordinator of the league, said that the main purpose of the league is for church brethren from different sanctuaries, can, through sports, have fellowship with one another, and. also for the unsaved players to know about Christ.

  • Rae Town, Tivoli win

    Rae Town and Tivoli Games scored the biggest wins as action continued in the Lucozade/ KSAFA Under-13 football competition.

    In Zone Three, Rae Town defeated Maxfield Park 3-0 while Tivoli Gardens beat Allman/Woodford 3-2 at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex.

    In other Zone Three matches, Boys' Town beat Greenwich Town 2-0, Olympic Gardens and Waterhouse ended 1-1.

    Duhaney Park and Meadhaven United were the only winners in Zone Four. Duhaney Park defeated Seaview 1-0, while Meadhaven beat Maverley/Hughenden by a similar score.

    Stony Hill Phoenix and Cooreville Gardens ended 0-0 while the scheduled match between Meadforest and Pembroke Hall was not played.

  • Sandals BH kicks off on Wednesday

    Sponsors Sandals Grande Ocho Rios are among 18 teams scheduled to take part in this year's St Ann/St Mary Business House football competition, which kicks off on August 8.

    The sponsors will be joined by Grand Lido Braco, Jamaica Inn, St Ann Development Company, National Meats, Sandals Dunn's River, Beaches Boscobel, Sandals Golf and Country Club, St Ann Fire Brigade, St Ann Bauxite, Hedonism III, Couples Ocho Rios, Gran Bahia Principe, Sunset Jamaica Grande, Riu Club Ocho Rios, Ocho Rios Craft Market, Couples San Souci and Walkerswood.

    Over $500,000 will be pumped into this year's competition, which will see St Ann Jamaica Bauxite starting as defending champions against newcomers Gran Bahia Principe at Drax Hall on August 7 in a 4:00 p.m. game.

    At the end of the competition, the winners are set to take home $60,000, second, $50,000, third $40,000 and fourth place $30,000.

    The teams will also be vying for other prizes, including the best dressed, which will be decided on the opening day at the dress parade for participating teams. The winners will get $10,000, while other awards such as Fair Play Award and Most Valuable Player will get $5,000.

  • Double-header at Thornton

    The Thornton Community Corner League continues tomorrow with two matches at the Thornton Community Centre.

    In the first game of the double header, Crownland tackle Young Russia at 3:00 p.m., while Boreland face Russia at 4:30 p.m.

    In last week's lone contest, Boreland defeated Drivers' Choice 2-1. O'Brian 'King Fish' Bucknor and Everton Wellington scored for the winners.

    Sheldon Palmer scored for Drivers' Choice, who went to the half leading the contest.

  • Sandals Whitehouse in quarter-finals

    In action from the latest round of Western Hotels Sports Association all-island netball matches, Sandals Whitehouse European Village Resort and Spa confirmed their quarter-final berth with a convincing 31-10 victory over Grand Lido Negril Resort and Spa at the Hi Lo Car Park recently.

    In other matches played recently, Bank of Nova Scotia Jamaica Limited Negril Branch were annihilated 55-13 by St. Ann Jamaica Bauxite Partners.

    In the feature encounter, pre-competition favourites and the much-talked-about glamour team Breezes Montego Bay, finally showed their worth, when they stunned former many-time champions Sandals Negril Beach Resort and Spa 34-21.

    Defending champions Grand Lido Braco Resort and Spa returned to winning ways on their home ground with a scrappy but morale-boosting 36-14 victory over Runaway Bay Heart Academy and Training Institute, the latter losing for the second time in three days following a 38-24 loss to Tryall Hotel on Monday, July 23.
