Jamaica crush T&T in tcl U-19 limited overs
published: Tuesday | August 14, 2007

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts (CMC):

Jamaica underlined their superiority over Trinidad and Tobago with an authoritative 175-run-win in the opening match of the TCL West Indies Cricket Challenge Limited Overs Series at Cayon here yesterday.

After being inserted by Trinidad and Tobago, the Jamaicans were led by solid contributions from skipper Derval Green (69), Nkruma Bonner (51) and Horace Miller (40) as they chalked up a massive 285 for seven off their allotted 50 overs.

Bonner then snatched three for 11 with his leg-spin, while the impressive pacer Jason Dawes snared three for 15, as Trinidad and Tobago were routed for a measly 110 in 41 overs.

Only skipper Adrian Barath looked the part with a solid 65 before he was ninth out, caught at deep-square-leg off Bonner, after facing 91 balls and hitting seven fours and one six.

Jamaica, who finished in the runner-up position in the three-day league championship, gave a fine all-round performance which must have surely pleased regional selector Andy Roberts who was present.

Barath won the toss and inserted the opposition, a move that back-fired as the Jamaicans were given a good start by opening batsmen Miller and Christie Jones.

They showed no respect for T&T's mediocre opening bowling attack, scoring at will to all parts of the ground.

The pair added 28 in 24 balls before they were parted, when Jones (19) was brilliantly caught and bowled by Brent Cameron.

Bonner joined Miller, who struck a run-a-ball 40, and the two featured in an enterprising second wicket stand of 69, before the latter was caught by Cameron off Varoon Samaroo.

Bonner, who had a match-haul of 11 for 129 in the three-day league match against T&T, showed his prowess with the bat with his half-century before he was the third batsman out, caught by Barath off Kavon Cooper with the total on 136. He faced 64 balls and hit six fours and two sixes.

Green then plundered his 69 from 70 balls with six fours and a six to lift Jamaicaup to their eventual total.

Off-spinner Kjorn Ottley took three for 46 to be the leading bowler.

T&T started their quest for victory shakily, losing opening batsman Milton Dookeran and Darren Bravo with consecutive deliveries.

The left-handed Dookeran (13) was run out in a terrible mix-up with Barath with the total on 20, and with the next ball, the usually prolific Bravo (0) was given out leg-before to Dawes.

Barath tried to steady the innings but found no help from his counterparts as wickets tumbled at regular intervals.
