THE EDITOR, Sir:FOUR YEARS ago, a friend whom I consider to be like the Gestapo, Interpol and the CIA rolled into one, came to Jamaica, visited me and advised that the Jamaican dollar was headed for the $100 to US$1. The Jamaican dollar was then approximately $53.00 to US$1. He was very negative in his analysis of the offerings of Jamaica.
He asked why I did not even visit the United States again. I said that I had no inclination to go anywhere, because I am quite contented, as everything I can get in the United States I can get cheaper here in Jamaica; I do not have to pay high fares, or worry about possible terrorist attacks.
He returned to Jamaica a few weeks ago with his son, to give him a taste of his heritage. I was pleasantly surprised when he applauded the current growth in the country. One has to pull teeth to get commendations from this gentleman.
I say the above to say this. Jamaica is a vibrant democracy and I can confidently say that come the day after the election, whether it is a win for the Jamaica Labour Party or the People's National Party, life as we know it will go on.
Both parties have stable, capable and educated men and women who, along with tons of consultants, can effectively represent us. We can only hope that they will go full speed ahead with the current progress and not turn back in any way.
I am, etc.,
