Help offer to Jamaica Public Service
published: Saturday | August 25, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Some 10 years ago, I retired from the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) after serving for 15 years as general manager, public relations. During my tenure, one of the disasters which we experienced was Hurricane Gilbert, which devastated the electricity system islandwide, causing a total shutdown.

We were able to devise a massive restoration programme using a zoning system. This made it possible for me to broadcast to the nation at 6:00 p.m. each day in which I was able to say what zones were restored that day and the zones which would be worked on the next day.

Guest lecturer

At the end of the programme, I was invited by Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication at the University of the West Indies, Mona campus, as a guest lecturer to their students on the restoration programme.

I have tried for three days without success to contact the relevant department (Corporate Communications) as they do not answer their telephones.

My intention was to suggest a similar zoning programme which I know would help the company and its customers to understand on a daily basis what was going on in restoring power following Hurricane Dean.

Maybe it's not too late to adopt such a system. I stand ready to assist if JPS so desires.

I am, etc.,
