Fewer persons in hurricane shelters
published: Friday | August 31, 2007

The number of persons occupying shelters has declined to 201 occupants in 16 facilities across the island, according to The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).

In a release last night, ODPEM said there were two open shelters in Kingston and St. Andrew (KSA) and two in St. Thomas and they both had the highest number of occupants, 25 and 58 respectively.

Preliminary estimates have revealed the health sector sustained damage amounting to J$168.4 million.

The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) has restored power to 88 per cent of its customers. Restoration is ongoing in the parishes of Manchester, Clarendon and St. Elizabeth.

The National Water Commission is reporting that 94 per cent of its water-production capacity has been restored. The commission has indicated, however, that there are isolated problems on the individual distribution systems, which it is working to restore.
