The Reca Trophy, to be contested by only six starters over 1400 metres, is today's feature event at Caymanas Park and, from all indications, the American horse CAPTAIN BONE is afforded a glorious opportunity to notch his eighth career win.
The 10-race programme offers a whopping Pick-9 carryover of $7.6 million, having eluded punters for the ninth consecutive race day on Wednesday.
With some heavy volume of betting anticipated because of this, the Pick-9 payout should easily top the $9-million mark. On Wednesday, 18 punters with seven of nine winners received consolation prizes of $20,050 each.
The Super-6, meanwhile, was caught by only one punter. He received a cool $924,314.50 and this popular exotic bet starts anew with the guaranteed minimum of $500,000.
THIRD WIN
Trained by Glenville 'Foody' Morrissey, CAPTAIN BONE, who two years ago was a successful allowance horse when trained by many-time champion Philip Feanny, bids for his third win of the season.
With conditions favourable, he seems well poised to unsaddled in the winners' enclosure with leading jockey Trevor Simspon astride.
CAPTAIN BONE, who in Novem-ber 2004 won the prestigious Red Stripe Mile for imported horses, has been dropped in class to vie for this trophy and from the convenient mark of 54.0kg, looks the right choice.
When last raced on a $460,000 claiming tag in the J. W. 'Judge' Hardie Memorial Cup over 1600 metres on August 11, CAPTAIN BONE finished eight lengths sixth to ALL FIRED UP and SIR KHAN, but has come down two classes in quest of this trophy.
SHOULD WIN EASILY
He was 11 lengths third to SIR KHAN when last venturing over this trip on July 21. Now back among his peers, the six-year-old son of Storm Boot-Always East should win from the free-running FIWI EMBLEM, also down in class, and TOUCHDOWN who ran creditably (third) behind JET BLASTER over 1200 metres at this level on August 18, but prior to that was a distant eighth to CAPTAIN BONE over 1500 metres July 7.
I am expecting CAPTAIN BONE to race just off the early pace, that should be set by the fleet-footed RISING MOON and FIWI EMBLEM, before disposing of them from early in the straight.
Other firm fancies on the card are SCHIZANDRA in the second race, FIREWATER in the fourth, SIR KUNJABIHARI in the fifth, JJ'S RED ROCKET in the sixth, down in class TOCUMEN over recent winner KING AL in the eighth and BLACK RIVER to upstage HAR-MONICS in the ninth race over the straight five course.
