Four jostling for KO
published: Saturday | September 8, 2007

Four teams, including a trio from Group C, will enter today's final round of matches in the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) all-island limited overs competition battling for a spot in the quarter-final round.

Leaders St. Thomas (nine points), Lucas and St. Catherine Cricket Club (eight each) are the teams with a chance of securing the two available spots.

St. Catherine CC coach, Ephraim McLeod, said they are approaching the game in a positive frame of mind, as they aim for maximum points.

McLeod said he is expecting key players, Wayne Morgan, Dean Morgan, David Morgan, Keith Hibbert, Andre Russell and Damion Bryce to take them to victory.

"We are expecting them to lead the batting and bowling," said McLeod. "And if we play our best cricket it should give us the result we want."

John Gordon, coach of St. Thomas, said he is unaware of what the St. Catherine team has to offer as most of their top players are away playing league cricket in England.

However, he was quick to point out that they would be going to Chedwin Park for one reason and that is to win and qualify for the quarter-finals.

"I have no idea what they look like, so we have to just go in for a win," said Gordon.

Fitzgerald Anderson and Marvin Darlington are his top batsmen this season, while Christie Jones and Omar Brown should lead the bowling.

Lucas, also on eight points and playing away to Westmoreland who are yet to secure a point, are gunning for maximum points.

A win for Lucas and a defeat for anyone in the feature match could see Lucas and the winner advancing to the second round.

Meanwhile, in Group B, Manchester and Kensington are fighting to join Police in the quarter-finals. Manchester must win today against Kingston & St. Andrew, while Kensington will be hoping to beat Boys' Town and hope Kensington lose.

Manchester are on eight points and Kensington, the defending champions, are on five and with four points for a win, the latter could move to nine.

Melbourne and the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) from Group A, Police from Group B, as well as St. Elizabeth and Portland from Group D have already qualified for the quarter-finals.
