DESPITE A comfortable 2-0 win over Maverley/Hughenden in the Sherwin Williams Women's League at the Constant Spring Complex on Wednesday, Waterhouse coach Xavier Gilbert believes his team still has some work to do ahead of Sunday's mammoth knock-out clash with defending champions Harbour View.
"We are happy for the result, we had a better second half but our finishing left a lot to be desired. We will have to try and fix that before our final on Sunday," Gilbert said.
"Our possession of the ball was good, but our performance in front of goal was rather shaky," he said. On the weekend, the Drewsland team had won by a more comfortable 4-0 margin, to book their place in the KO final.
Opening goal
On Wednesday, Shanise Steele got things started for Water-house with a 39th-minute free kick. Twenty five yards from goal, Steele blasted a high curling shot, which dipped over the head of a rooted Telesha Campbell, the Maverley custodian. Despite a spirited second-half showing by Maverley, Waterhouse would pull even further ahead through an unlikely source. Central defender Marla Simmonds powered her way forward in the 87th minute, moving past several defenders before blasting the ball past a stranded Campbell.
However, Maverley found themselves with several chances to grab an equaliser. Latoya Daley found herself staring at a gaping net from an Anna-Kay Williams cross but scooped the effort high over the crossbar from no more than eight yards out. Minutes later, busy Genesha Pickersgill unleashed a one-time volley at goal from a long, drifting Williams cross, but the ball ended up straight in the bosom of Waterhouse 'keeper Kimberly Green.
"It was a much more spirited performance by the team than last week's (KO) semi-finals," said Maverley manager Michael Lowe.
"We haven't had our full team since school has started. With majority of our team being schoolgirls it's going to be difficult," Lowe said.
In the day's other games, league leaders Harbour View, who moved to seven points, had to settle for a share of the points following a 0-0 draw with Barbican at Barbican Complex. At Cling Cling Oval, two goals from Sydonie Hall led hosts Olympic Gardens to a 2-1 win over promoted Meadhaven United.
