Powell, Campbell strike gold

ASAFA POWELL, the world fastest human, and world 100 metre champion Veronica Campbell, were Jamaican winners at yesterday's Van Damme Golden League meet in Brussels, Belgium.

Though he failed to achieve his aim - bettering his world-record 9.74 done less than a week ago - Powell did well to win the men's 100m dash in a fast 9.84 seconds, running against a 0.3 headwind. He blamed his run yesterday on the bad weather.

"This time it was the weather, not the bad start," Powell told reporters after the race.

"Of course, the restart doesn't help, but it was about 10 degrees colder than last week in Italy, so the conditions just weren't right (to break the record)," he said.

Powell, who broke his own world record of 9.77 in Italy last Sunday, finished ahead of Norway's Jaysuma Saidy Ndure (10.11) and MVP teammate Michael Frater third (10.12).

Great place to run

"This (Brussels) is a very quick track and a great place to run with a terrific crowd, so hopefully, some day I can achieve a world record here," he said.

In the women's dash, Campbell recovered from a slow start to win easily in 11.11 seconds.

Frenchwoman Christine Aaron, who led for the first three quarters of the race, finished second in 11.22, while American Torri Edwards, who was also credited with the same time, was third.

Delloreen Ennis-London was a second-place finisher in the women's 100m hurdles. She finished in 12.61 seconds behind Susanna Kallur, who was timed in 12.52 seconds. American Michelle Perry, whose Golden League jackpot bid was spoiled last week by the same winner, was also credited with 12.61.

Jamaicans Aleen Bailey and Sheri-Ann Brooks were fifth and ninth in 11.30 and 11.45 respectively.

World Championships silver and bronze medallists Usain Bolt and Novlene Williams were third-place finishers yesterday. Bolt finished third in the men's 200m in 20.14 behind the American pair of Wallace Spearmon (19.88) and Xavier Carter (20.04), while Williams (50.66) finished behind American Sanya Richards (49.29) and Britain World Championships silver medallist Nicola Sanders (50.34).

Shericka Williams was fifth in 51.06 while Shereefa Lloyd was eighth in 51.85.

The victory kept Richards in contention for the Golden League jackpot when she cruised to a season's best of 49.29 seconds in the 400m.

Victory for Richards in Berlin on Sunday will see her secure at least a part of the US$1 million Golden League prize as Russian Yelena Isinbaeva also remained in the hunt with a 4.80m leap in the women's pole vault.
