The Editor, Sir:
The week beginning September 24 has been a living nightmare for many Jamaicans as a result of the two major motor vehicle accidents, where 11 lives were lost. This is a grim reminder that we all need to make a conscious effort to drive responsibly at all times.
I believe that the powers that be need to intervene and protect some of these drivers from themselves. The time has come when the authorities need to correct the deficiencies with the ticketing system.
And, I am calling on the Transport Authority to implement measures which will allow for the cancellation of the licence of persons who have amassed a certain number of points, under the ticketing system, or persons who have been involved in accidents proven to be caused from careless and/or reckless driving.
These persons should be mandated to resit the driving test after a one-year break, and also attend state-arranged defensive driving courses, at their expense, before being qualified to own another driver's licence.
I am, etc.,
